Apprenticeship Competencies

ESRC Grand Union doctoral studentship in collaboration with the Edge Foundation

The Centre on Skills, Knowledge & Economic Performance (SKOPE) at the Department of Education is seeking to award an ESRC collaborative studentship in collaboration with the Edge Foundation. This is a full-time studentship is co-funded by the  The Edge Foundation  and the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) through the Grand Union Doctoral Training Partnership (DTP) for three years from October 2019.

Boosting the number of apprenticeships is a policy priority in the UK and apprenticeships have seen considerable policy interventions recently. However, increased quantity does not mean better quality. This doctoral research will investigate what it means to be a competent or ‘skilled’ worker and how competency is demonstrated and varies across tasks and occupations. The study will compare and analyse apprenticeship types and the differences in task and competency across three occupations – a traditional trade/occupation; a modern but established occupation; and a newly emerging occupation.

The student will be based in the Department of Education at the University of Oxford. It will start in October 2019. The first supervisor is Dr Susan James Relly from the SKOPE Research Centre at Oxford University. Prof. Chris Warhurst of the Institute for Employment Research at the University of Warwick is the second supervisor. Support will be provided by Dr Andrea Laczik from the Edge Foundation. The successful student will be expected to engage fully with the project partner throughout the duration of the research.

The deadline for applications is 25th January 2019. Details about applying can be found here. Queries about the studentship should be addressed to: susan.jamesrelly@education.ox.ac.uk. The successful candidate will also be expected to meet the standard entrance requirement for a DPhil in Education.

In addition you must complete a Grand Union DTP Application Form  and upload it, together with your graduate application form. Please ensure you also select ‘ESRC Grand Union DTP Studentships in Social Sciences’ in the University of Oxford scholarships section of the University’s graduate application form.
