Ann Karin Sandal, Associate Professor from Western University of Applied Sciences (HVL) in Norway, is visiting the Oxford University Department of Education and the SKOPE Research Centre from 18th February until the 5th March.
She will present a study of development of vocational teachers' professional development related to assessment for learning (Afl). In Norway, vocational education and training (VET) is part of upper secondary school and is regulated by educational legislation. VET is a four-year programme, and consists of two years in school and two years as apprentice before the final trade examination.
Since 2006 there has been an extensive investment in post- qualification and further education of teachers in primary and to some extent in secondary schools in assessment and especially Afl. However, VET- teachers have traditionally limited access to post-qualifying education and courses. In order to enhance formative assessment practice in VET and to meet the need for professional development in this field for VET-teachers, HVL designed a continuing education course in Afl for VET-teachers. The learning activities were built upon the distinctive features of vocational learning and VET-teachers` practices, exploring different approaches to Afl in VET. A qualitative study was set up to investigate How can a continuing education course in Afl contribute to VET- teachers` development of assessment competence and practice?
The presentation will present findings from this study, as well as how VET is a part of the educational policy and debate in Norway.
