In the 1960s and 70s some economists argued that modern labour markets had become segmented - that those who found themselves in its lower reaches found it almost impossible to escape because of various structural factors such as internal labour markets. This seminar will consider recent contributions to the re-vitalisation of this debate in North America and Europe. The topics covered will include: the changing structure of jobs and pay; occupational mobility and progression; the inter-generational transmission of disadvantage, irregular employment; job instability and insecurity. Speakers will be Marcel Erlinghagen, University of Duisburg-Essen, David Marsden, London School of Economics, Francois Michon, University of Paris, Steven Rytina, McGill University and Craig Holmes and Ken Mayhew from SKOPE, University of Oxford.
A buffet lunch will be provided and the event will end with a drinks reception.
Places will be limited so an early response would be appreciated.
