Gerbrand Tholen is a British Academy Postdoctoral Fellow in SKOPE. His research interests include graduate employability, skill utilisation, occupational change, labour markets, national skill formation and the competition for high-skilled jobs. Since joining SKOPE he has been part of an in-depth study on the work of estate agents (with Susan James, Chris Warhurst and Johanna Commander) and an investigation into labour market transitions (with Craig Holmes).
His current research project (2012-2015) aims to create a better understanding of the graduate labour market through mapping and synthesizing existing research, as well as providing an in-depth inductive investigation into three graduate occupations. In doing so it will construct a new sociological theory, complementing and/or transcending existing attempts to describe the relationship between credentials, skills, jobs and the labour process.
