Craig Holmes presented research from SKOPE's project on polarisation labour markets at the 2nd Annual Research Conference on 'Exploring social mobility and delivery mechanisms in international perspective', organised by the Education and Employers Taskfor

The paper is entitled "Room at the top - and the bottom, too", and looks at the view that the change in the occupational structure over the past three decades has mostly improved labour market outcomes for workers. It draws attention to the possibility for downward mobility and worsening early employment outcomes for new entrants as low-skill service occupations have grown and middle-wage routine occupations have declined. Moreover, it argues that even those moving up to apparently good jobs tend to earn less than might be expected.
