Applications are being sought for a prestigious (1+3 or +3) full time PhD Studentship, to be based in theCardiff School of Social Sciences at Cardiff University, to begin in October 2012.This studentship will be linked to the wider work of the ESRC Centre on Skills, Knowledge &Organisational Performance (SKOPE) on low paid employment and skills, will explore managerialperceptions of workers’ need for literacy and numeracy skills, and compare and contrast this withobservation of actual skill usage in a range of workplace settings.

On September 26th Gillian Bristow and Madeleine Pill were invited to present the findings of their research at a Welsh Government workshop, chaired by Jonathan Price, Chief Economist. The presentation was followed by a panel discussion, with Professor Ewart Keep of SKOPE, Professor Gareth Rees of WISERD, and Philip Gummett of HEFCW.

Caroline Lloyd and Jonathan Payne, SKOPE Cardiff University and Françoise Larré, Toulouse Université le Mirail have produced a Research Brief which summarises some of the findings from an international research project on vocational teachers.  The Brief outlines the experiences of vocational teachers in England, Wales, Norway and France, exploring how the job is designed and structured acorss the different countires and the extent to which teachers are able to develop and apply their knowledge and skills.

In collaboration with RAND Europe, SKOPE was successful in the recent Cedefop (European Centre for the Development of Vocational Training) tender with the title ‘Attractiveness of European initial vocational education and training: what really matters’. Using a multi-method approach, the 12 months project looks at concepts of attractiveness in vocational education and training and the role these concepts play in a wider range of European Union Member States.
