This paper examines a neglected, but important, group of workers, namely techniciansin university laboratories and engineering workshops. Using data from Englishuniversities, the main focus is on the qualifications, skills, recruitment, and training oftechnicians. Factors shaping employer decisions about recruitment and training areexamined, in the context of broader human resource management arrangements andthe development of technician registration.
